Angelo, a Piedmontese officer pursued by the Austrians for his participation in national struggles against the domination of Vienna, seeks refuge in Aix-en-Provence. But cholera strikes the region and he is accused of having poisoned the wells in Manosque. He fled through the rooftops and met Pauline de Theus who was looking for her husband.
