Cinema | Into the work of Stéphane Brizé

The French Institute of Cambodia welcomes the French director Stéphane Brizé in residence in November! 

After a few days in the Cambodian capital where he will meet the students of the Bophana Center and PSE film school, Stéphane Brizé will present two of his films at the French Institute of Cambodia on November 23: A Woman’s Life at 8:30am and Another World at 6:30pm. Discover his work and meet him after the screenings for a Q&A!

Stéphane Brizé was born in 1966. He has directed nine feature films, including Not Here to Be Loved, Mademoiselle Chambon (César 2010 for Best Adaptation), A Few Hours of Spring and The Measure of a Man. The latter was in competition at Cannes in 2015 where Vincent Lindon received the Interpretation Prize then the César for Best Actor. This was followed by A Woman’s Life, an adaptation of Maupassant’s novel, in competition at Venice in 2016 before receiving the Louis Delluc Prize. Then At War, in 2018, in competition at the Cannes Film Festival. His movies often observe the financialization of the economy while showing the consequences for women and men of its mechanisms. Another World, in competition at the 2021 Venice festival, was highly received in French cinema at the start of this year.

Set in Normandy in 1819 and adapted from the classic French novel Une Vie by Guy de Maupassant, the film recounts the trials and tribulations in the life of a young woman from the day she returns home from a convent and her heart is awakened by a local Viscount. Watch the trailer!

An executive manager, his wife and his family, at the point when his professional choices are about to overturn all their lives. Philippe Lemesle and his wife are separating, their love irretrievably damaged by the pressures of work. A successful executive in industrial conglomerate, Philippe no longer knows how to respond to the contradictory demands of his bosses. Yesterday they wanted a manager, today an enforcer.
