[IRASEC Conference Series: Buddhism & Society]

Buddhism as practiced by the elders (theravāda) claims to come closest to the experience of a man of high rank who discovered the inanities of mundane life based on the satisfaction of one’s desires. He came to the conclusion that the solution was in the renunciation of normal life through life as a beggar (bhikkhu). How, from such an antisocial starting point, did we get to the Buddhism we have before our eyes in South East Asia?
